In a new paper in the Asia-Pacific Sustainable Development Journal I show that despite decades of effort by the international community in helping least developed countries (LDCs) transform their economies — and some progress — performance has fallen short.

Great argument Dan. When you say these countries are stuck in a core of dependency – aka core capital, that intervention is necessary to get out of this is bang on. It seems too easy to be drawn into the current ideological flow. And so hard to break out. Deprived of education and resources they don’t even know there is an alternative perspective; only seeing what is presented to them.I also liked the analogies you give to make a point… the income many receive each day being equivalent to the value of a cup of coffee in the West.
Thanks Alan, you’re right – what does seem difficult is the sense of complacency, as if it should be normal for a billion people in a quarter of the world’s countries to be stuck in deprivation. There’s not much to be gained from undue moralising or hand-wringing, but I wish there was more of a sense of urgency and injustice.
